Health Unit Presents Eat Smart! Awards to Local Eateries

 

The Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Health Unit will present the 2006 Eat Smart! Award to over 50 local restaurants, workplaces and school cafeterias in the city of Guelph, Wellington and Dufferin counties. Eat Smart! Ontario’s Healthy Restaurant Program recognizes restaurants and cafeterias that meet high standards in nutrition and food safety, and provide a smoke-free setting. Public health inspectors and community dietitians ensure that all Eat Smart! standards are met by the recipients. The current award is valid to December 31, 2006. Recipients are awarded an Eat Smart! certificate, receive door decals identifying them as an Eat Smart! winner, and are promoted locally. “The Eat Smart! symbol throughout Ontario is a guarantee that the restaurant or cafeteria offers you a variety of healthy food choices on the menu and upon request, at least one full-time kitchen staff member certified in safe food handling by Public Health, and a smoke-free setting.”, says Al Venslovas, Health Promotion Specialist at the Health Unit.

Eat Smart! Award recipients also include several school and workplace cafeterias. The Cafeteria Program is designed to help workplaces provide and promote healthy eating. Qualifying workplace cafeterias must be 100% smoke-free, in addition to meeting the nutrition and food safety requirements.

Partners of the Eat Smart! Program in Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph include the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Health Unit, Community Heart Health Network, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and the Canadian Cancer Society.
